We hope you enjoyed our discussion of Patti Smith's book, Devotion. If you wanted to participate but haven't had the time, never fear. The discussions stay open so we can continue for as long as you like.
What books would you like to discuss next year?
We are looking for suggestions.
Since City of Lies has been shelved for the time being, LAbyrinth isn't really timely now. I did read it and it is an interesting book. I really hope Johnny's movie sees the light of day.
I have also read Waiting for the Barbarians. I enjoyed it and I will need to read it again before the movie comes out. It is deep. There are lots of layers of thought and meaning to everything that happens in it. I found a study guide that offers some detailed information. Study Guide
The Smith biography might be well-suited to ONBC if there is enough interest to warrant all the work the moderators do to prepare.
I know that I'm not often attending but I'm sneaking in here and there.
I only want to add that I'm very looking forward to the ' Snow Moon ' I was fascinated by reading the Cinderella's Chronicles' , back than. Just saying.

And back to the question at hand, I have to admit a strong interest in Waiting For the Barbarians. I have not read it yet. I will be doing so in the next month. I read several of Coetzee's short stories and I was literally blown away.
In addition to the books mentioned here, I recall seeing him holding a book about the beginnings of the human race. Can't remember the title for anything. This would have been in the last year or perhaps two? I will see if I can track it down as another option. Anyone here know what book I have in mind?

Yes that's the book I've meant...and no, I haven't more informations about it. I don't know either if it's a book series with different single stories or if it's a sequel to 'Cinderella's Chronicals'. We'll learn more when Johnny will produce a movie out if it. Thanks for researching this, anyway

Smith is indeed an interesting subject, as is his work in Minamata. The topic has been a personal draw for years. The problem is cost and availability. Smith's own book Minamata is priced over US$100, and therefore out of reach for readers like us. Another book about him that sounds worthwhile -- Let Truth Be Prejudice -- W Eugene Smith his life and photos -- is only available in limited quantities from third party sellers with prices that start fairly low but quickly escalate. Out of print books are weird animals. Some languish unpurchased for years but the mere hint of interest inspires booksellers to yank prices skyward because they have a tiny pile that could suddenly bring them riches. Having once struggled with a book publisher over an out of print book I wanted her to sell me a number of copies of at discount prices, I am loathe to do that again. I didn't win.
I am strongly leaning towards Coetzee's Waiting for the Barbarians. Not a very long book. Extremely well written. I was excited to learn the other day of a rumor that the movie would be premiered at Cannes in May. That doesn't mean it would be offered as part of those films being considered for awards, but it is indeed a hopeful sign that it might be ready. I really like this writer so much, and the topic is quite timely.

Pleased to meet you! Unofficially, as it hasn't been officially announced, I am planning the Coetzee book. Right now, I have to leave for work but I will be back in the afternoon to describe more.
