I remember reading On the road by Kerouac when I was 12. Just because I read he's one of Bowie's favourite writers. Didn't like it then, but re-read it a few years ago and love it now.
I also read "Das Schwert und die Puppe" by Laurens van der Post. Don't know the English title, but the movie "Furyo - Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence" with David Bowie was based on it.
And there are also two other books on his list I would mention on mine: Last Exit to Brooklyn by H. Selby and A Clockwork Orange by A. Burgess.
