English Translation of original French article:
Johnny Depp will play Louis XV in Maïwenn's next film
CASTING – Blacklisted in Hollywood, American actor Johnny Depp has just been recruited by French director Maïwenn. He will play Louis XV in a feature film whose shooting will begin in Versailles next summer.
It is an association as exciting as it is unexpected. Our colleagues from the professional letter Satellifacts reveal that Johnny Depp will star in Maïwenn's new film, currently in preparation. At the top of the bill, the American actor will play Louis XV in this project produced by the company Why Not Productions, which has already accompanied the actress and director on her latest feature film , ADN .
The shooting of this new film will begin on July 8, in the Paris region, with several sequences at the Château de Versailles, specifies Satellifacts . This is the first major project of Johnny Depp, 58, since the legal setbacks that plagued his career in Hollywood. In November 2020, he lost his lawsuit against the English tabloid The Sun which had described him as a “woman hitter”, following statements by his ex-girlfriend Amber Heard.
The actor was ousted in the wake of the filming of the third installment of the Fantastic Beasts saga , after a few days of filming. He was replaced by the Dane Mads Mikkelsen in the role of the wizard Grindewald and has not toured since, taking refuge in particular in music with his group, Hollywood Vampires.
Last September, he came to the Deauville Festival to present City of Lies , a thriller filmed in 2017, but never released in theaters due to his personal problems. Box office champion for more than twenty years, he took the opportunity to thank his fans. “ They are my bosses. And they are also the bosses of the studios. It is also time for the studios to understand it”, he had launched in front of the press.
A few days later, at the San Sebastian Festival in Spain, he said he was a victim of this " cancel culture or this tendency to rush to a hasty judgment based essentially on what looks like polluted air exhaled (...) I can tell you that no one is immune ".

Thanks Snoopy, this is great news. Johnny puts everything into any project so I'm sure he'll really enjoy this role. Hollywood don't know what they've lost.

From Variety:
Johnny Depp to Star as Controversial French King Louis XV in Maiwenn’s Next Film
By Elsa Keslassy
Johnny Depp will star as French king Louis XV in the next film directed by French helmer Maiwenn (“Polisse,” “Mon Roi”) whose shoot will begin this summer, Variety has confirmed.
The movie, whose title and exact plot are kept under wraps, is being produced by Pascal Caucheteux and Gregoire Sorlat’s Paris-based Why Not Productions (“A Prophet”), with Wild Bunch International (“Titane”) handling world sales.
Filming will take place for three months on location across Parisian landmarks, mainly at the Versailles Palace.
Maiwenn will star as Jeanne du Barry, a countess who was Louis XV’s last mistress.
Louis XV, who was nicknamed “the beloved” and reigned for 59 years, the longest in the history of France after that of Louis XIV. Paradoxically, Louis XV died as an unpopular king after being accused of corruption and debauchery. The project was first reported by the French website Satellifax.
The American actor, who has been accused by his ex-wife Amber Heard of domestic violence, hasn’t made a film since Andrew Levitas’s 2020 film “Minamata,” a film about war photographer W. Eugene Smith.
Although he’s fallen from Hollywood’s good graces since the accusations and his libel case against U.K. tabloid The Sun, Depp hasn’t faced much backlash in Europe. He recently received honorary awards at the Karlovy Vary Festival and San Sebastian Film Festival. Depp was also celebrated at the Deauville American Film Festival, in the French Normandy, in 2020, and received an award from the hands of Catherine Deneuve.
Unless Maiwenn’s film shoots in English, which is unlikely, this role as Louis XV will require Depp to work on his French. He lived in France for many years with Vanessa Paradis, with whom he has a daughter, Lily Rose Depp, but still has a noticeable American accent.
The period movie will mark a departure for Maiwenn, an actor-turned-filmmaker whose films are all contemporary and often personal. Her last film “DNA,” a thought-provoking ensemble family drama was part of Cannes 2020’s Official Selection. Her previous film, “Mon Roi” earned its star Emmanuelle Bercot a best actress award at Cannes in 2015; while her 2011 drama “Polisse” won the Cannes jury prize.

Well, given the fact that he's pretty much been living in France for the past two years now, I would say his French should be good by now. Great news, but every article that comes out now will mention those accusations by a horrible psycho and evil ex wife. I see people on SM are photoshopping his head onto King Louis XV picture but it will be interesting to see what kind of a spin he will put on the character. We all know what he did with Tonto so I guess anything is possible.

Johnny, having heard him speak French in recent events, still has a noticeable accent. It's one of those languages where you can always tell whenever you have characters who are supposed to be French, who are not played by French actors.
So I've been wondering if either Johnny is going to heavily work on that (though I don't think he can lose the accent) or they're shooting it in English, which seems unlikely. Or perhaps they're fine with it.

First, I do believe that Johnny is extremely talented in the area of accents --- he has mastered quite a few. At the same time I don't believe he has ever been called upon to master French for a script. To be able to convincingly come across as "French" within a film which contains a series of lines would be far easier than attempting to master the French language and pass as "French." They are two different things. So, yes, I can imagine him doing this and I would look forward to it. And no worries for those of us not proficient in French. The odd thing about subtitles is how they seem to vanish, and one comes away totally convinced they've understood every word in a language they've never studied.
Just imagining him speaking French. Lord, lord, lord.....

Looks like this will be on Netflix
