Thanks for the link, SnoopyDances.

Although it was nice to read some complimentary things about the Minamata film, I got the feeling the writer was on a tight leash. And not a single comment from Johnny, developer, producer, and lead actor. For a minute, in fact, I thought this was something from 2018 given the old Variety clickbait “ RELATED” piece ‘Can “Fantastic Beasts” Sequel Survive Johnny Depp?’ embedded in the body of the current article. No excuse, except to stand unapologetically knee deep on the wrong side of the roaring rapids.

Personally, I will never forgive Variety for barely waiting for the credits to roll before ravaging Richard Says Goodbye (now aka The Professor) at the ZFF last year, thereby signaling to the four other heavy hitters writing reviews from the venue to follow suit. And they all did.

I was over at Stephen Deuters twitter account today and he has posted a link to a Magnum Photos article and photo essay that provides us with really great access to the book, "Minamata: W. Eugne Smith's Warning to the World." It's short but provides one of the best overviews of Smith's work in Japan that I've come across. Excellent text and, of course, Smith's photos are compelling. In lieu of access to Smith's biography (because of cost) this piece provides us with great insight into Smith, his purpose and his personality. Great resource.

Here is the link:

Cannes First Look: Johnny Depp as War Photographer W. Eugene Smith in 'Minamata' (Exclusive)

Hollywood Reporter
Article by Alex Ritman
13th May 2019

HanWay is shopping the film internationally in Cannes.

Johnny Depp is joined by Japanese actress Minami (Battle Royale) in this exclusive still from Minamata.

The drama – being directed by Andrew Levitas – sees Depp play acclaimed war photographer W. Eugene Smith. Levitas directs from a screenplay by David K. Kessler, who adapted the book by Smith and his wife, Aileen Mioko Smith.

Bill Nighy, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tadanobu Asano, Ryo Kase and Jun Kunimura also star.

The redemptive thriller sees Smith (Depp) take on a powerful corporation responsible for poisoning the people of Minamata, Japan, in 1971. With the glory days of World War II far behind him, Smith has become a recluse, disconnected from society and his career. But an old friend and a commission from Life magazine editor (Nighy) convinces him to journey back to Japan to expose a big story: the devastating annihilation of a coastal community.

Depp is producing via his Infinitum Nihil banner, along with Sam Sarkar and Levitas under his Metalwork Pictures banner and Gabrielle Tana. Jason Forman, Stephen Deuters, Peter Watson, Phil Hunt, Compton Ross, Gabrielle Stewart, Stephen Spence, Peter Touche, Norman Merry, Kevan Van Thompson and Peter Hampden are executive producing.

HanWay Films is handling international sales and distribution on Minamata, which will continue in Cannes. CAA Media Finance will handle U.S. rights.

New York’s W. Eugene Smith Evening at SVA (School of Visual Arts) mentions Minamata and Johnny Depp. Scroll down to paragraph 5. 2020 still referenced as the release year.

It appears the press screening for Minamata at the 70th Berlinale is tomorrow (Feb 20th) morning, the world premiere is Friday, Feb 21st. Wonder when Johnny will arrive; hope he finds a way to enjoy every moment.
