Re: CITY OF LIES (LAbyrinth) Updates
USA Network is going to run a TV series on Tupac unsolved murder. I wonder if this will help or hurt Johnny's movie. Will it create more interest or over saturation,
What do you think?

Re: CITY OF LIES (LAbyrinth) Updates
I hope that's not true about it being released in the first quarter of 2018, especially if it's a really good performance from Johnny. After the Black Mass snub it would be sad to see another Oscar-worthy performance goes unrecognized.

Re: CITY OF LIES (LAbyrinth) Updates
Kind of ballsy of Sullivan to tell Johnny face to face that he didn't know if Johnny could underplay the part enough. I guess I could understand his concern if there's nothing about Poole that immediately sets him apart. Johnny is quite adept at playing characters who are extreme in some way, but he hasn't done "understated" all that much. On the other hand, given that there's probably a decent amount of audio and maybe video of Poole, I wouldn't dare doubt Johnny's ability to do a reasonable portrayal of the guy...Lbock wrote:https://youtu.be/sVq9FwAhe-w
You tube audio conversation. Said could be Johnnys finest performance

I don't want to take this thread off topic, but just wanted to say that I think Johnny's performance in The Man Who Cried was nicely understated, as well as those in Edward Scissorhands, Donnie Brasco, Dead Man, The Brave and Whats Eating Gilbert Grape. There are probably more (Finding Neverland, Chocolat).

When he plays an understated character as he did in the Tourist he gets a lot of criticism. But doing that takes a lot of control.jruoss wrote:Kind of ballsy of Sullivan to tell Johnny face to face that he didn't know if Johnny could underplay the part enough. Re: CITY OF LIES (LAbyrinth) Updates
Almost immediately after I posted, I began thinking of roles where his character was not particularly extreme, mostly pre-FALILV, but there have been a few, Gilbert Grape, Deadman, and The Brave certainly stand out. I was forgetting about The Tourist, nothing too flashy about that guy until his true identity is revealed, but I think Poole probably required a different type of restraint than Tupelo, and probably different from most of Johnny's 90's characters. In the 90's, understated was sort of Johnny's niche, with a few loud exceptions, that was a very prevalent part of his acting persona.
The main difference here, other than Johnny's personality having grown since then, is he's playing a real life person, one who sounds somewhat more restrained than Joe Pistone. Anyway, it sounds like he did okay, I'm looking forward to the movie!

I find that hard to believe and hope it's incorrect, to be honest.SnoopyDances wrote:According to IMDB, the US release date for LAbrynth is Feb. 7,2018.

Re: CITY OF LIES (LAbyrinth) Updates
Hasn't it been scheduled for early 2018 for awhile now? It would make sense in terms of when it was shot. I guess I'm missing what's hard to believe and or wrong with that date? Maybe it's not the hottest time for box office numbers, and it's far too early for that over-rated jerk Oscar. But if Johnny's okay not obsessing over that stuff, then I sure am. Also, Johnny's got a gaggle of upcoming movies already filmed, and, speaking purely as a viewer(which is why they make them in the first place), I'd prefer to have their releases more spread out rather than overly bunched up.Sweeney Todd wrote:I find that hard to believe and hope it's incorrect, to be honest.SnoopyDances wrote:According to IMDB, the US release date for LAbrynth is Feb. 7,2018.

Re: CITY OF LIES (LAbyrinth) Updates
Something is not quite right. For a movie due in theaters in little more than a month, it is nowhere to be found on Rotten Tomatoes’ “Coming Soon” list (now showing films with release dates well into March’18), not listed as a film on the site, and not a single mention - much less an official trailer or poster. Early February is indeed a “Death Valley” time frame for film debuts, we all know that. I guess the question is: why keep it here when it supposedly had some very positive word of mouth by the time it wrapped?
Johnny’s 2018 schedule is crowded, though not just with films: in addition to four films being released, he has the McGowan “party” in January, LAbyrinth with attendant promotion etc. in February, Sherlock Gnomes also with promotion stuff in March (23rd), ex-lawyers lawsuit currently on the docket for March, HV tour in June and July, TMG lawsuit in August, and FBCOG in November. Somewhere in there Richard Says Goodbye needs a spot as well. Perhaps February works best for all concerned. BUT, why is it being ignored . . . buried . . . ? Is this the kind of reception future Johnny-headlining films can look forward to?

Well, it's hard to believe that a movie coming out in less than two months doesn't have any sort of promo released. Even Mortdecai was promoted a year in advance.jruoss wrote:Hasn't it been scheduled for early 2018 for awhile now? It would make sense in terms of when it was shot. Re: CITY OF LIES (LAbyrinth) Updates
Guess I'd have to concur that February doesn't seem likely for this movie due to the absence of any trailers or promotion. Seems much more likely Sherlock Gnomes will be out first, followed by who knows what.
This may have come up earlier in this thread, but apparently Poole's theories about LA police being involved in the murders have some competition from another investigator, Greg Kading. I'm guessing LAbyrinth is going to go with the premise that Poole's theories are correct, but I'll post an article about Kading here.

Re: CITY OF LIES (LAbyrinth) Updates
So the question is, does Johnny believe Poole had it right, and how aware is he of other possible scenarios such as Kading's? But regardless of the truth of the case, I'd be willing to bet that much of what drew Johnny to the role is the story of an LAPD investigator (Poole) who was convinced enough that the guilt lay within his own police force to risk reputation and career (and maybe his life) over it. That in itself is a story.
