Can Johnny Depp really do everything?

SUSTAINABILITY - Why do we marvel that some people seem to be able to do "anything"? Why do we approach that almost skeptically?

Johnny Depp was in the Netherlands. At Pinkpop, of course, as a guitarist with the Hollywood Vampires. The Dutch music magazine OOR was surprised by this and asked the question: can this man really do anything?

Of course, we know Depp mainly as an actor in films: Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean, Wade Walker in Cry-Baby, Edward Scissorhands, and, last but not least, Joseph Pistone in Donnie Brasco. But Depp is not an actor who is now also trying to be a rock artist. He is actually a musician who was encouraged by Nicolas Cage to pursue acting. So, not the actor who also plays guitar, but the guitarist who also acts. Depp even quit school as a young kid, encouraged to do so by the school principal to become a rock musician. He only became more famous as an actor.

As a musician, Depp played for years with Jeff Beck. Beck was ranked fifth in the top 100 best guitarists in the world by that other famous music magazine, Rolling Stone, honorably between B.B. King and Keith Richards. In other words, Depp plays with the very best. That background is unknown to most, which is why the magazine OOR called Depp the surprise of the day at Pinkpop. So the answer to their own question is that Johnny Depp can indeed do anything. ...

With creative minds, then, adding value across disciplines is the rule rather than the exception. That’s because their starting point is not what exactly they can do (unlike the question from OOR’s journalist, which focuses precisely on that ability: So can Johnny Depp really do anything?). No, their starting point is curiosity, an unbridled fascination with the world, the organisms that live in it, and how those organisms handle things. When that curiosity is combined with a keen power of observation, with an eye for detail and the bigger picture, that curiosity also functions as a breeding ground for inspiration.

Curiosity + observation = inspiration
That inspiration is the fuel that creative minds combine with a hefty dose of passion and drive. That cocktail of traits enables them to add value to multiple disciplines. ... Similarly, Johnny Depp did not play Captain Jack Sparrow, he became Captain Jack Sparrow. He did so, inspired by Keith Richards, through a combination of imagination and empathy. Creative minds like Leonardo da Vinci, Herbert Simon, and Johnny Depp are guided by the creative process, not the final product. Some say that is the secret behind Depp’s success and not a particular acting talent or anything like that.

HOLLYWOOD VAMPIRES
FollowingBoston.com

Language :censored: warning

Producer, Michael Kalish recently spoke with Tommy Henriksen, guitarist for the Hollywood Vampires, before his show at the Boch Center. The American rock supergroup was formed in 2012 by Alice Cooper, Johnny Depp, and Joe Perry.

MK - “Hello Tommy, it’s a pleasure to speak with you. Thank you for making time with your busy schedule. We come with questions from our community, before we do, can you share a few highlights from the recent European tour with the Vampires?”

TH - “There were so many highlights…are you kidding me?? Having Ronny Wood get on stage, and then being backstage with Jimmy Page talking about Jeff Beck. Jimmy is just wonderful, and Ronnie is amazing. Another would be Tony Iommi… I mean getting to do Paranoid with Tony!! This was the first time he had played outside of Black Sabbath. When you’re in the Vampires, you never know who will show up. The coolest thing about this tour Michael, is there’s no record company promoting, this is all word of mouth from the fans on social media has made this tour a sell out.”

MK - Community question - “What is it like to play with Joe Perry, guitarist for Aerosmith? Joe is a legend in Boston and around the world… a true master of the craft.”

TH - “Joe Perry has been one of my heroes and idols since I was a kid. To be next to Joe, and to get to know him, it’s just one of those things. Add to that, Glen Sobel on drums, Chris Wyse on bass, and keyboardist, Buck Johnson. We have a great time every night. There are so many moments where you don’t know what will happen with these guys since nothing is planned. Even though we have a setlist, when we’re playing, Joe will just start going… and we follow.”

MK - Community question - “ Let’s talk about Johnny. How does it feel to be in a band with Johnny Depp, and what is your favorite movie of his?”

TH - “First of all… Johnny Depp never dies. There was this rumor online saying he died in a hotel room. I was like, who the f*** makes this stuff up? The one thing about Johnny that nobody knows is he has so many talents, from his artwork to poetry, music to movies, just a generous guy. As fas as films, I love Ed Wood and From Hell… which you never hear about.”

MK - “Hollywood Vampires does the best cover songs… Bowie, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix. What is the selection process for these songs, and how much does Alice Cooper love Jim Morrison?”

TH - “Alice, Joe, Johnny, and myself get together to discuss what kind of songs we want to cover and where they go in the set. Alice does Jim Morrison so well. He loves The Doors and the song 5 to 1. Those were the first songs we ever did with the Vampires.”

MK - “What can the fans expect to see and hear tonight at the Boch Center in Boston, Massachusetts?”

TH - “The production is incredible… there’s something for everyone… I mean Alice Cooper is the best showman ever. The members of this band love and respect each other and the fans will see that.”

Johnny Depp Shows Gratitude Onstage at Hollywood Vampires’ First U.S. Tour Stop
People

"I can’t believe I just met him,” 12-year-old Molly Smith said after receiving a hug from the 'Pirates of The Caribbean' actor

Johnny Depp is delighting U.S. fans once again!

After canceling multiple international performances — most recently last week in Slovakia — The Hollywood Vampires, featuring Johnny Depp, Alice Cooper, Joe Perry and Tommy Henriksen, took to the stage in Boston Friday night to play before a sold-out crowd of 3,500 at the Boch Center’s Wang Theatre.

Prior to the performance, Depp arrived at the venue's backstage entrance and made a beeline to the fans who had gathered behind a barricade, hoping to catch a glimpse of him. The actor and musician took selfies, signed autographs and gave hugs to at least 20 of the more than 60 screaming fans.

Molly Smith, a 12-year-old from Concord, New Hampshire, was one such fan, and became tearful when she received not only a selfie with Depp, but a hug from him, too.

“He smiled at me and all I could get out was `hi’,” Smith says. “My mom got me into his movies and into his music. I can’t believe I just met him.”

Her mom, Cathy Smith, says Depp was “unbelievably sweet” to not only her daughter but others in the crowd whom he met.

“He really was so nice, and I’ve never seen her that excited,” she says of her daughter’s encounter with Depp. “She will never forget this.”

While all of the band members — including touring bandmates Glen Sobel, Buck Johnson and Chris Wyse — have long-established careers in the music industry, it was Depp, who is known primarily for his movie roles, who fans appeared to be the most excited to see.

When Depp took over the microphone to sing the lead vocals on “People Who Died” (The Jim Carroll Band cover) 10 songs into the 19-song setlist, the audience erupted in cheers and chants — everything from “we love you, Johnny” to “Jack Sparrow rocks,” a nod to his popular character in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies. Later in the set, he again received deafening cheers when frontman on a cover of David Bowie’s song “Heroes.”

Wearing a striped blue denim cap, a black vest — with “Hollywood Vampires” written on the back —over a black short-sleeve shirt, black pants and black boots, Depp showed continuous signs of appreciation for the audience. He pumped his fist to his heart and stretched it out to the crowd, clasped his hands together in gratitude, waved and smiled almost constantly. He played guitar for all of the songs and sang backing vocals on several.

After the encore — Cooper’s iconic “School’s Out” — Depp received gifts, ranging from stuffed animals to a custom Hollywood Vampires jacket, from fans who made their way to the stage.

Ahead of the show, several fans had said they were confident The Hollywood Vampires would not cancel the Boston show. Depp's band canceled several of their latest shows in a row, including a Slovakia tour date in mid-July.

"Upon arrival today to the venue in Slovakia to begin set up for tonight’s performance, it quickly became clear that the construction of the facility was incomplete, and therefore unsafe for both the band and the general public," wrote Hollywood Vampires in a since-deleted note on Instagram, attributed to the four main members as well as touring bandmates Sobel, Johnson and Wyse.

Back in May, Depp posted to Instagram the news of a fracture that would keep him from touring with his band for awhile.

However, one fan admitted to calling the theater Friday morning to make sure the nearly two-hour drive would not be for naught.

“I guess for a split second I thought `oh no, what if they cancel this one, too,’” says Iliana Donis, 32, a daycare worker from Lawrence, Mass. “But then when my brother and I got here and saw all of the equipment trucks [and] tour buses, we felt confident that the show would go on.”

And while she’s a big fan of the band, the mother of four says it’s Depp who was the main draw for her to attend the concert.

“I’m just such a fan of his and the kind of person he is,” Donis says. “I love his acting, his music, his art… he is so talented, but he is so humble, too.”

A source at the venue said that Depp arrived in Boston just before the show – unlike Cooper, who tells PEOPLE that he spent five days prior to the concert in Beantown.

“We usually don’t get that kind of time off, so my wife and I went everywhere in and around Boston,” Cooper said when he arrived at the venue, adding that he had “some great food and played golf.”

The Hollywood Vampires are scheduled to play in Manchester, New Hampshire, on Saturday and in Bethel, New York, on Sunday.

Thanks Snoopy, I love when we get positive press for Johnny, the media might milk the hate thing or the negative stuff but when you read these kind of stories it just shows how much the fans love him. For Johnny that's the ultimate compliment and it's the fans he really cares about. :heart2:

Guitar Magazine:

Alice Cooper has opened up about what it’s like being in a band with Hollywood superstar Johnny Depp.

Cooper – who plays in the rock supergroup Hollywood Vampires alongside Depp, Joe Perry and Tommy Henriksen — shares his experience touring and working with the band during a new appearance on QFM96’s Torg & Elliott Show.

Asked about the band’s popularity with female fans and the paparazzi in particular, he replies, “You have no idea. You have no idea. It’s so funny because Joe is on the left side of the stage, I’m in the middle, Johnny is on the right. Every woman is looking on the right side of the stage. Every once in a while I slide over there just to get a little bit of that and then go back to my spot.”

The rocker also has nothing but praises for the actor and musician, saying, “Johnny’s great. When he’s with us he’s not a movie star – he’s a guitar player. And he’s a great guitar player. You don’t go out with Jeff Beck unless you can play guitar, and he really is a player.”

He adds, “The band is so tight. We’ve been together nine years and there’s never been one argument in that band. It’s just fun.”

In other news, Cooper’s 22nd solo album Road is set for release on 25 August.

Speaking about his new single White Line Frankenstein, which features Rage Against the Machine guitarist Tom Morello, Cooper said: “White Line Frankenstein is a monster that we created. It’s a truck driver who’s been out there a long time. He’s the king of the road. He doesn’t live in a house. He lives in that truck.”

“In the song, this surreal tough guy is driving on white lines for his whole life. So, White Line Frankenstein would be his CB handle. It’s monstrous and definitely a stage song.”
