Known for covers that make the band Alice Cooper, Joe Perry and Johnny Depp will be the Rock in Rio Lisbon
If ever a group of people received the title of super band, is this: Alice Cooper, who created the "shock rock" with the homonymous band, Joe Perry, guitarist for Aerosmith, and Johnny Depp, the renowned actor who returns the dream of being a musician.
How did this project?
Alice Cooper (AC). - We all have roots in rock 'n roll, we did it for 45 years, Johnny plays guitar since remember I was in my band, he [Joe Perry] was in it, was very good. but there was always that idea, "would not it be cool to have Joe Perry as a guitar player? Having Johnny? And if Duff was the bass player? And if we can get the Zak Starkey touch anything? We always think of these combinations, and it turns out now we could do it. It was the time and the right place, and there was a reason to do so. It was to pay tribute to our alcoholic friends who died. And at the time we recorded that none of us drank; all we spent by alcohol and drug wars and recovered, while these friends that we honor did not. They were geniuses at what they did. But also paid the price of being geniuses, and many of them simply could not resist alcohol and drugs, so we are doing a tribute. It's also fun for us to join with and being a band bars.
A band of bars?
AC - Yes. We're so used to playing our own songs. It's fun to play a song the Rolling Stones, The Beatles, The Kinks, because it was with them that grew were the songs that we started.
As selected the songs for the album?
Joe Perry (JP) - The songs chosen to themselves. We sat down to listen to them, and some do not make the album because we felt it did not work. After we recorded many albums we already know what works, what is the vibration. And back to why we made this album, we thought we'd do something with covers, and when the tribute entered the equation gave him more strength to exist.
AC - If we do a cover of John Lennon, will not be Imagine. What would be perfect? Cold Turkey. Because it is a rock music is going to be brutal on stage. We have to think about who we have on the guitar. Eliminates a number of songs from the outset. We thought a Keith Moon music, what do we do? My Generation, of course.
One of the two original songs is the one that pays tribute, Dead Drunk Friends. How is that man?
AC - always wrote the lyrics and depended on these gentlemen to compose great melodies.
Johnny Depp (JD) - One night was recording in the studio and I kept thinking that sound suited to be drunk. I was alone and came to me this melody. I ran to the sound engineer and told him "writes this!" not to forget me. So we had that sound, opened and everyone started [to collaborate]. It's like a skeleton, you begin to add meat, layer after layer.
How is your relationship in the studio?
The C - This is the fabulous thing: I think there was a single discussion. We made so many albums, may have written a thousand songs in total, and when they join these people and we are working on a song egos are set aside. There are no egos here. When we got into the studio we started playing and singing and the ego appears, has to feel on the album, but when we write we hear the ideas of others, and say "oh, this is good, let's try it." If not admit it, but there is no discussion. That was one of the most amazing things this project.
JD - Here all complement each other. There was this attitude to be a bit noisier than others. Everyone has estimated and had great respect for others. We just want to play and like how we sound.
JP - No one here needs to prove anything. We just want to make music the best it can be.
In February they released a new edition Deluxe, with another original [Bad as I am]. Such has been the reaction?
AC - Yes, that was the music that we played at the Grammys. not read a single negative review yet, they have been excellent. I think this is one of those albums that has its own life. We are already working on the next and this is one of the songs, just a taste of what the next job can be. I like the fact that this not be structured, the way we work.
Your performance at the Grammys was also innovative.
JP - We broke many rules. They really wanted us to play. Usually it has to be a band that people know or have a song on the charts, and for some reason we got over it, I do not know why. I've been in this ceremony a few times and faced these obstacles, but not this time.
AC - It turns out that this is a song about drinking, and Lemmy died due to alcoholism. Pay tribute as well to Lemmy, who was the salt of the earth, the epitome of British rock star, this song sounds like it was written for him.
They have a tour this year, and will at the same time working on the next album?
AC - Yes, that's how it works, it is written for the next album when you're on tour, because we spend a lot of time in hotel rooms. We work two hours a night. The rest of the time we are to sit there, what do we do? We started working on new songs.
It will be then an original album?
JP - I hope so, you never know. Someone may say "oh, really have to do a cover of this song." There are no rules in a band like this.
JD - It's the good of it, none of us comes here and says "how do we write a hit?". These guys had careers with great success and wrote classic hits that will be forever, but did not write them to be. The approach to this album and the next is infinitely more pure. When the album came out in September, we could have given all possible interviews, but chose not to do so because this is not a campaign, a popularity contest. It's just music and a toast to the dead alcoholics friends. No one in come here to say "have to do this, they have to have that." This is what we wish. It is freedom.
AC - Can someone come and say: we have to make a song of Bowie. What do we do? Rebel Rebel. We entered the studio and recorded, to see what works. Is this the relaxation of it all.
In May play at Rock in Rio Lisboa. Fans can expect covers or surprise guests?
AC - It depends on who is there. We do not know who's in the lineup, but I guarantee that anyone we know, we know from everyone. At the last second we can see someone and tell them to take the stage and play. We try to be so unpredictable.
JD - Someone will take the stage, I'm sure.
What kind of people go to your concerts?
AC - In Rock in Rio Brazil the audience was very young. They respond to pure rock, and that's what we played. I think they felt the energy. We have not reached there with the attitude expect to like us. We went with the attitude to grab them by the throats.
JD - is rare. In the musical world today, it is very rare to hear a band centered on guitars. revolutionary guitars, as these gentlemen did in their time. Rock 'n roll pure, shrill, based on guitars, has this power.
What is the song you prefer to play live?
JP - I have to say Train kept a-rollin. We used to play it three times a night. It's one of those songs that everyone loves. If we walked looking for a new band, a new drummer, it was the first song that was playing, because everybody knew.
AC - It's a song that we played all the bands initially. When we were in school we opened the concert with her. Brown Sugar is fun, because the [Rolling] Stones are very sexy. When people hear those first notes are crazy.
JD - For me, the Billion Dollar Babies. I became a five year old to say "Nãoooooo, we have to play a Billion dollar babies, of course everyone wants to hear." Almost begged. It is very rewarding to play these songs because I'm playing with the masters. I'm still waiting for someone to wake me up and say you've been in a coma for the past 18 years and none of this happened.
Johnny, that it is playing with these rock legends?
AC - But you know that credibility now we won with our daughters ?!
JD - It's an honor when we have the opportunity to meet our heroes and not disappoint us, on the contrary still inspire us more because they are talented, intelligent, kind and collaborative, and more things for which I have no vocabulary. Play with them and have the opportunity to go on stage, writing songs with them, it is the dream I had to leave at a certain moment of my life - because of my other work - come true.
JP - For me, being on stage with one of my favorite entertainers. You can not count the amount of times I've seen some of his films. I love his talent, to represent that way. But this is about music. We have overcome the part we are fans of each other and we moved to the music. People ask, "Johnny plays guitar?" But it is not just a good guitar player, he is a fantastic guitarist and crushes you when they listen. That is what builds our friendship. Music is such a fantastic language.
