In an interview at the Cannes Film Festival, director Terry Gilliam confirmed that he is about to tilt at windmills again, but when his dream project The Man Who Killed Don Quixote, torpedoed by a series of disasters in 2000 and embroiled in a lengthy legal battle for most of a decade, finally goes before the cameras, its leading roles will be recast. Ewan McGregor will replace Johnny Depp in the role of the 21st-century advertising executive who travels into Don Quixote’s literary landscape, and Robert Duvall will take over the role of Don Quixote from Jean Rochefort.

The legendary bad luck that befell Gilliam’s first attempt to film The Man Who Killed Don Quixote was chronicled in the award-winning 2002 documentary Lost in La Mancha. How does Ewan McGregor feel about taking over the leading role in a film with such an unfortunate past? McGregor told MTV’s Todd Gilchrist, “I try not to think about the pressure and the scary side of what you’re about to embark on, but just think of it as being a challenge.
