ONBC begins its discussion of Bryan Burroughs' PUBLIC ENEMIES today!

Today Oprah Noodlemantra’s Book Club begins its discussion of Bryan Burrough’s book PUBLIC ENEMIES: AMERICA’S GREATEST CRIME WAVE AND THE BIRTH OF THE FBI, 1933-34. This is the source of the script of Michael Mann’s upcoming film PUBLIC ENEMIES, starring Johnny Depp as John Dillinger and Christian Bale as FBI Agent Melvin Purvis.

ONBC moderators Liz and DeppintheHeartofTexas invite you to the discussion–it’s a great chance to learn about Dillinger’s career as a bank robber and see why he’s such a fascinating subject for a movie. Be sure to check out the tidbits, too–meticulously researched bits of history and background on Dillinger, his cohorts, the other bank robbers, the FBI, and the Midwestern locales that feature prominently in the story. It’s wonderful to have the opportunity to discuss PUBLIC ENEMIES just as Johnny is preparing to play Dillinger, and Liz and DITHOT have done a fantastic job preparing this discussion. Hats off to ONBC! –Part-Time Poet

Johnny Cash video, "God's Gonna Cut You Down," wins a Grammy–congratulations!

The Johnny Cash video “God’s Gonna Cut You Down” won the Grammy for best short form video at the 50th Grammy Awards, held on February 10th in Los Angeles. The first release from Cash’s posthumous album AMERICAN V: A HUNDRED HIGHWAYS, the video was shot as a tribute to Johnny Cash and features 36 celebrities (mainly musicians) wearing black and mouthing the words to the song over Mr. Cash’s vocal. Johnny Depp appears very briefly near the end of the track; he is standing in a theater box in front of a curtain, playing his guitar. The photo at left is from the black-and-white video. The Zone thanks Endora for breaking the news, and congratulates all the artists who participated in the video of “God’s Gonna Cut You Down.” –Part-Time Poet
