ONBC begins their discussion of WAIT UNTIL SPRING, BANDINI today

Oprah Noodlemantra’s Book Club begins its discussion of John Fante’s classic novel WAIT UNTIL SPRING, BANDINI today. ONBC chose this book because Johnny Depp is a huge fan of John Fante’s series of Arturo Bandini novels; at one time, he hoped to appear in the film of Fante’s Bandini novel ASK THE DUST, and he was scheduled to write the introduction for the Canongate edition of WAIT UNTIL SPRING, BANDINI until the events of this spring left no time in his schedule. A coming-of-age tale set in Colorado during the Depression, WAIT UNTIL SPRING, BANDINI vividly explores the frayed relationships in an Italian family through the eyes of the eldest son. Do stop by the ONBC forum for what is sure to be a very stimulating discussion! And thanks, as always, to Liz and DeppintheHeartofTexas for their outstanding work. –Part-Time Poet

Best action DVD ever? PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL, says DVD MONTHLY

Congratulations to PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL, which tops DVD MONTHLY’s list of the all-time best action DVDs . . . an impressive feat when you consider that second place is occupied by a boxed set of twenty James Bond films, from DR. NO to DIE ANOTHER DAY, and third place is the Indiana Jones trilogy! “A stunning film is backed up by an amazing DTS track and a boatload of booty to keep you occupied for hours after the film finishes. With zombie pirates, swashbuckling action, and of course ladies’ favorites Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom (not to mention Keira Knightley giving her bodice-ripping all), there’s something here for everyone,” writes DVD MONTHLY. The second POTC film, DEAD MAN’S CHEST, ranks 5th on their Best Action DVD list.

The issue, dated October 2007, features Captain Jack Sparrow on the cover and contains a review of the DVD of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: AT WORLD’S END, due to be released in the UK on November 19th. North American release date for AT WORLD’S END is December 4th. Thanks to Gilbert’s Girl and In-too-Depp for the news; you can see scans of DVD MONTHLY on the Zone’s News & Views forum. –Part-Time Poet

Johnny Depp pens "a loving introduction" for new book on Hunter S. Thompson

A new book on the late Hunter S. Thompson will arrive on Halloween. GONZO: THE LIFE OF HUNTER S. THOMPSON is co-written by Jann Wenner, the Good Doctor’s longtime editor at ROLLING STONE, and Corey Seymour, and features an introduction by Johnny Depp. According to Bill Husted of the Denver Post, “The book is an ‘oral biography’ by Jann Wenner and Corey Seymour–which means they sit around and talk to different people about Thompson. And it isn’t all whiskey, LSD and laughs. Johnny Depp, who portrayed Thompson in the 1998 movie FEAR AND LOATHING IN LAS VEGAS and paid for Thompson’s elaborate funeral, wrote the loving introduction. He met Thompson late one night at the Woody Creek Tavern. Thompson entered with a cattle prod and a Taser as he threatened to shock the $%#@* out of anyone who got in his path. He found Depp in the corner, they shook hands. ‘The beginning,’ Depp writes, ‘of a long and deep-rooted friendship.'”

GONZO: THE LIFE OF HUNTER S. THOMPSON will be released on October 31st with a cover price of $28.99 hardcover; it is available for pre-order at Amazon for $19.13. http://tinyurl.com/3dqez4 To see a larger version of the cover, click here: http://tinyurl.com/3xp22e The Zone thanks Theresa for sharing the news; you can read more about the book on the News & Views forum. –Part-Time Poet

BREAKING NEWS–Tim Burton press conference at Venice Film Festival may include Johnny Depp

The news coming in from Venice just keeps getting better and better! In conjuction with the Venice Film Festival’s Tim Burton Day on Wednesday, September 5th, Tim Burton will be holding a press conference at 1:30 p.m. Italian daylight time–and Burton fansites are reporting that the director will be accompanied by the stars of SWEENEY TODD, Johnny Depp and Helena Bonham Carter. Longtime Zone readers will recall that was the case in Toronto for the CORPSE BRIDE premiere: Burton, Depp, and Bonham Carter held a joint (and very witty) press conference to promote the film. We hope this rumor proves true; since all three will be in Venice for Burton’s Golden Lion ceremony that evening, it does seem credible. The Venice Film Festival will offer a live feed of the press conference on Wednesday; here is a link to their site: http://tinyurl.com/2ppa79 For our U.S. readers, the press conference will begin at 7:30 a.m. Eastern time and 4:30 a.m. Pacific–please join us on the Zone for some morning revels.

Many thanks to emma for breaking the story about the press conference, GAO for news from Japanese fansites, and AnaMaria for help with time conversion. –Part-Time Poet
