Gore Verbinski to direct THE LONE RANGER, with Johnny Depp as Tonto

The rumors are now official: Walt Disney Pictures has confirmed that Gore Verbinski will direct Jerry Bruckheimer’s new version of the Western classic, The Lone Ranger. Johnny Depp, who has Cherokee ancestry, will play Tonto; the role of the masked Ranger has not yet been cast. Justin Haythe (Revolutionary Road) wrote the script. The Lone Ranger will reunite the producer, director, and star of the first three Pirates of the Caribbean films: The Curse of the Black Pearl, Dead Man’s Chest, and At World’s End. Verbinski has also directed JD in the animated film Rango, scheduled to arrive in theaters on March 4, 2011.
