DEAD MAN'S CHEST boosts summer movie revenues, says AP's David Germain

Johnny Depp’s PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN’S CHEST gave a welcome boost to summer movie revenues and re-energized an industry that had been in decline, writes David Germain of the Associated Press in his end-of-season report. The record-breaking box office performance of DEAD MAN’S CHEST brought audiences back to the theaters; factoring in higher ticket prices, Germain says, the moviegoing audience actually grew about 3.1 percent this summer, while revenues were up more than 6 percent. DEAD MAN’S CHEST grossed more than $400 million domestically, making it far and away the most successful movie of the North American summer. Three other films–CARS, X-MEN: THE LAST STAND, and THE DA VINCI CODE–grossed more than $200 million each; SUPERMAN RETURNS is hovering around $196 million and may cross the $200 million mark before it ends its run.
