"Paris has been very kind to me": Johnny Depp receives the City of Paris's highest honor

The mayor of Paris, Betrand Delanoe, took the occasion of the French premiere of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN’S CHEST on July 6 to present Johnny Depp with the Grand Medaille de Vermeil. It is the city’s highest honor for achievement and is only given to those who have displayed devotion to Paris. “I’m very honored and very touched, and a little bit shy,” Johnny said–in French–as he accepted the award. “This country–the city of Paris has been very kind to me,” Johnny added. “It introduced me to my beautiful girl Vanessa, and it gave me two beautiful kids. It doesn’t get any better than that.” The Zone thanks emma for supplying the transcript of Johnny’s remarks and emma and Charly for the the videos of the ceremony on our Video Clips forum.

BREAKING NEWS–New photos of Johnny Depp leaving a London restaurant on July 4th

After spending July 4th doing press interviews to promote PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN’S CHEST, Johnny Depp had dinner at London’s posh San Lorenzo restaurant with his good friend Tim Burton, Tim’s partner Helena Bonham Carter, and Johnny’s longtime agent Tracey Jacobs. Might the dinner-table conversation have included some discussion of Tim’s next film project, SWEENEY TODD? Tim is reportedly considering Johnny for the role of the notorious Demon Barber of Fleet Street. The Zone thanks bonnie for posting the pictures–you can see a larger version of our thumbnail HERE.

"I enjoy acting more and more," Johnny Depp tells GOOD MORNING AMERICA

Johnny Depp appeared on GOOD MORNING AMERICA today, July 5th, to promote Friday’s release of PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN’S CHEST. For the interview taped in London, Johnny wore his orange Gonzo shirt, jeans, trinkets, and a grey fedora. The GMA reporter suggested that Captain Jack Sparrow, being such a memorable character, would have “overwhelmed a lesser actor” and labeled him for life as Captain Jack, but that Johnny’s impressive resume–with performances like Edward Scissorhands and Ed Wood–protected him. “Although there is the off chance that I’ll end up at fast food chains doing personal appearances,” Johnny said, grinning, “or golf tournaments as Jack Sparrow. Things like that.”

At the beginning of his career, Johnny considered himself a musician who took acting jobs to pay the rent. But he told GMA that acting has grown on him: “It’s a process that I enjoy more and more,” he said. Might that process include playing Captain Jack again? “You never know,” Johnny replied. “I mean selfishly as an actor, I just think I could continue on, because he’s just so much fun to play.” The Zone thanks DeepinDepp for breaking the story and Susanne for posting the segment on Video Clips. You can find both Johnny’s and Keira’s GOOD MORNING AMERICA appearances on the ABC website HERE.

Johnny Depp will NOT play Michael Hutchence in biopic

Johnny Depp laughed when a reporter asked if he was going to play the late INXS frontman, Michael Hutchence, in an upcoming film about his life. “It’s not true,” Johnny told a room full of reporters in Los Angeles during the promotion for PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: DEAD MAN’S CHEST. “No one ever approached me about it.” Johnny only heard about the Hutchence film, SLIDE AWAY, when a friend sent him a copy of a media report that claimed that not only had Johnny agreed to play Hutchence, but that Johnny’s girlfriend of the mid-’90s, Kate Moss, would be playing Hutchence’s girlfriend, Paula Yates. Laughing at the bizarre story, Johnny said that he didn’t think he was the right person to play Hutchence, anyway. “I knew him pretty well,” Johnny said. “He was kind of a glam guy. He was like a god, like a shaman, so I don’t think I’d be the guy.”
