In an interview with Ciar Byrne of The Independent, bestselling British author Nick Hornby discussed his reaction to learning that his new novel, A LONG WAY DOWN, had been purchased by Warner Brothers and would be made into a film produced by Johnny Depp. “I was very excited when I first heard from him,” Hornby told the Independent. “I’ve always thought he was really cool.” And Johnny did not disappoint: “He’s been so courteous and warm and genuine during the process of buying the book that he’s even gone up in my estimation,” Hornby declared.

And is Hornby a fan of Johnny’s performances? “He’s always made some really interesting choices. He’s had a very varied career and hasn’t done any rubbish.”

Although the press release about A LONG WAY DOWN was careful to specify that at this time Johnny is only attached to the project as a producer, Hornby would be pleased to see him tackle a major role. When reporter Byrne asked point-blank if Johnny Depp would be appearing in the film, Hornby replied, “I think so. I think that might be what attracted him to the book.” According to Hornby, the role that interests Johnny is Martin Sharp, “a disgraced breakfast TV presenter” who is one of the novel’s quartet of main characters. No doubt Warner Bros., which according to the Telegraph paid “several million pounds” for the rights to Hornby’s novel, also hopes that Johnny will act in, as well as produce, A LONG WAY DOWN.
